Fertility Management

Canola
Fertility management is the key to maximizing crop yields. Fertilizer is the largest crop input investment, so assessing appropriate fertilizer needs is the key to maximizing yields.

With increases in hybrid canola seeded acres, fertility management is one of the most significant crop inputs to ensure the full yield potential is realized.  Our collaborative research with Westco, indicates that nitrogen requirements for optimum yield of hybrid canola cultivars are higher than that of conventional canola cultivars. Maximum yield for hybrid canola was obtained with an additional 30 lb of soil + fertilizer N/acre. For details on the fertilizers requirements for hybrid canola see the attached summary.

Viterra’s agronomic specialists can assist in determining the appropriate fertilizer rates for the crop and quality parameters necessary for end use markets; their expertise is integral in helping our growers maximize the value of their fertilizer investments.

Environmental Stewardship

Viterra is also committed to environmental stewardship as evidenced by our leadership role in the industry-wide initiative with Canadian Fertilizer Institute.  With the implementation of Best Management Practices (BMP), crop nutrients are applied at the right rate to meet the needs of the crop, at the right time for maximum availability to match crop uptake, and in the right place to reduce losses of nutrients from the soil. By combining tools such as soil testing with other BMPs like proper application methods and timing, agricultural producers can optimize farm profits and production and, at the same time, minimize environmental effects.

Anhydrous ammonia (NH3) Safety

Viterra is committed to good stewardship both from a customer safety and an environmental perspective.  Viterra maintains some of the highest safety standards in the industry when it comes to handling products such as NH3, training producers in safe handling and application on-farm. Training is the key to the safe use of this valuable cost-effective product. Contact your local Viterra retail for more information on the availability of NH3 and our safety training program.
